Civic Center Plaza, Shoes

On the way home, June 2006

On my way home in the afternoon, I pass through the Civic Center Plaza. Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Plaza becomes a marketplace — this is where you can buy $10 sunglasses, newsboy caps, stickers, and Arabian Nights shoes. The oddest things here are the plexiglass paper weights with large bugs suspended in them. I do not know who buys them. But I know the people who buy and wear these shoes have a thousand tales to tell, as interesting and colorful as the shoes themselves. And this is why I live and work where I do: I want to walk by bejeweled shoes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and think about the 1001 stories they might tell.
